Somali pirates have hijacked a Panamanian-flagged cargo ship with 15 Indian crew on board 100 nautical miles south-east of Dar es Salaam in the Somali Basin.

The 3,884dwt MV Asphalt Venture was attacked on 29 September while it was heading towards Durban after emptying its bitumen cargo in the Kenyan port of Mombasa, maritime advocacy group Ecoterra International said.

The ship, owned by Bitumen Invest, is heading towards Harardhere, a pirate base on the coast of central Somalia.

Somali pirates carried out 200 attacks last year and collected a ransom of more than $50m, according to maritime watchdog Ecoterra.
