India is planning to build a container terminal at Chennai Port in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu with an investment of INR36.8bn ($826m).

The terminal will be a public-private partnership and will have an annual capacity of four million teu.

The port has two container terminals handling two million teu of cargo but after its completion it will be able to handle ultra-large container vessels and deep draft vessels.

The first phase of the project will be completed by 2013 and the total project is scheduled for completion by 2017.
