ABB has secured a scope of orders to deliver its propulsion systems to be incorporated into two new cruise ships to be built by the Lloyd Werft Group in Germany, for Crystal Cruises’ ‘Exclusive Class’ vessels.

Under the set of orders, ABB will deliver Azipod XO units propulsion systems which have the electric drive motor in a submerged pod outside the ship’s hull.

The company will also deliver drives, electrical power plants and thruster motors.

It is reported that one of the systems is specifically crafted to allow the vessels to engage in ice-going service.

The gearless steerable propulsion system, Azipod XO will cut down the ship’s maintenance cost and enable them operate at optimum efficiency.

Two of the units will be capable to generate 22MW of power each and two with 19MW each allowing the vessels to operate on both open water and high-class ice operation.

"The gearless steerable propulsion system, Azipod XO will cut down the ship’s maintenance cost and enable them operate at optimum efficiency."

Additionally, the newly built ships will be incorporated with ABB’s 800xA automation system, coupled with EMMA Energy Management System and fleet management suite.

EMMA enables facilitates a fuel-efficient operation of the ship by leveraging on the chronological data and comparing it with the current conditions and implement improvements on the same.

GHK Marine Operations & Newbuilding senior vice-president Gustaf Gronberg said: "ABB’s long experience in podded propulsion andpower generation for both cruise ships and ice breaking vessels makes them the ideal and most reliable partner for these projects."

Last year, ABB had secured a contract from Carnival to deliver electrical power plants and the Azipod propulsion systems for the cruise operator’s two new vessels.
