Fairwood Peninsula Energy’s subsidiary Delfin LNG has awarded a contract to San Francisco-based Bechtel to carry out front-end engineering and design for the first US-based, floating liquefied natural gas vessel (FLNGV).

After the delivery, the new vessel will serve Port Delfin, a proposed deepwater port and floating LNG facility that is located off the coastline of Cameron Parish, Louisiana.

Delfin LNG founder Frederick Jones said: "Delfin is excited that we have been able to develop a strong relationship with Bechtel because we could not think of a stronger partner nor a better management and project execution team to entrust with the performance of our FEED activities.

Delfin LNG’s project is claimed to be the first offshore, floating, natural gas liquefaction facility in the US. Delfin Offshore Pipeline will be responsible for delivering natural gas for Port Delfin.

The new FLNGV will be capable of being disconnected from the port facility and moving to protected waters during a hurricane, the company stated.

Bechtel is currently managing a significant portion of the world’s LNG liquefaction capacity under construction, including four projects in Australia and the first LNG export facility in the US.

In July, Bechtel announced successful conversion of natural gas from coal seams into LNG on the second production train at the Queensland Curtis LNG (QCLNG) facility in Australia.
