Damen Shiprepair Vlissingen has completed the upgrade work of a Keppel Fels N-class drilling rig of Rowan Companies, 30 days ahead of schedule.
Works under the project included the extension of the rig’s three legs from 10m to 180m, and bringing the facility up to standard for the AoC certification required by the Norwegian authorities.
By implementing innovative project planning techniques and highly specialised equipment, Damen was able to successfully reduce the project duration of this rig in the North Sea by nearly 25%.
Vlissingen shipyard has previous experience of converting jack up rigs and was selected for its large size, convenient location in the North Sea and suitable quayside.
Damen effected changes in its working practices and organisation to produce a plan that would enable it to undertake the three aspects of the contract simultaneously.
The Mammoet crane, Palfinger’s unique JUMP system and the PTC crane that was erected to a height of 200m were crucial to the project.
Damen is currently in discussions with two rig-operating companies regarding similar projects.
