Norway-based navigation and safety systems provider Kongsberg Maritime is deploying Netop-developed remote control software, SecureM2M, to gain secure remote access to all vessels with Kongsberg Maritime installations.

The SecureM2M software will allow Kongsberg to prevent cyber-attacks on its vessels.

Netop’s technology uses existing satellite connections and creates a secure tunnel into Kongsberg Maritime networked devices, thus providing remote support, troubleshooting, provisioning and asset monitoring, without exposing their systems to public internet.

Additionally, the SecureM2M eliminates the need for open ports, public IP addresses, configuring and maintaining VPNs to access devices, and provides external access.

Netop CEO Kurt Bager said that with an increasing number of cyber attacks facing any device connected to the internet, the company is pleased to provide Kongsberg Maritime with the new SecureM2M solution.

"This new and ground-breaking secure remote access software from Netop will decrease the vulnerability to cyber attacks."

"High-security, easily enabling remote services to unattended devices, combined with reduced costs and the possibility of providing excellent support to customers is a very exciting combination for many of our customers," Bager said.

Kongsberg Maritime fleet management product manager Erik Ellingsen said this new and ground-breaking secure remote access software from Netop will decrease the vulnerability to cyber attacks on vessels with Kongsberg Maritime installations.

"With few crew members with IT skills onboard most vessels, this software will also increase efficiency and productivity; improving customer satisfaction. Today, we have to handle issues over the phone or send out an engineer on-site. Going forward, problem solving on vessels can be handled immediately from shore with no geographic restrictions for our customer support engineers," Ellingsen said.
