Mexico-based offshore vessel operator Oceanografia has signed a contract with Kongsberg Maritime Simulation to deliver a suite of offshore anchor handling, dynamic positioning (DP), engine room and crane simulation systems.

Kongsberg Maritime will supply simulator systems identical to the systems installed onboard many of the company’s own fleet of vessels, especially for DP, anchor-handling and crane operations.

Kongsberg has not disclosed the value of the deal but said that its office in Mystic, Connecticut, US, will supply the systems.

The Kongsberg simulator will support the main infrastructure for a new offshore simulator training centre in Mexico.

Under the deal, Kongsberg will also provide dynamic positioning training software as well as both basic and advanced dynamic positioning trainers.

The K-Pos DP simulation trainer will be integrated into the Kongsberg Offshore Vessel Simulator (KOVS), including DP3 functionality to support the Oceanografia offshore heavy lift vessel (OHLV) OSA Goliath.

Kongsberg Maritime Simulation president Henry Tremblay said: "This world-class training centre will be equipped with the latest available offshore simulation technology and provide Oceanografia with the tools it needs to continue growing its expertise in maritime operations."

The K-Pos DP system will meet all new DNV, NI and IMCA standards coming into force in 2014.

According to the company, the Oceanografia Offshore Training Center will be certified for use in sea-time reduction training, where time spent in simulator training will reduce the requirement for live training at sea.

The company will also provide an integrated heavy lift crane simulator that will be matched to the crane on Oceanografia’s OHLV Osa Goliath.

Oceanografia has signed up for a five-year system support programme to keep up-to-date with regulatory changes and the latest Kongsberg developments.

The Mexican offshore vessel operator has already started construction of the new training centre and the simulators are scheduled to be ready for training by October 2014.
