Maritime classification society Lloyd’s Register (LR) is set to class Maersk Supply Service’s anchor-handling tug supply (AHTS) vessels.

In October, Maersk signed a contract with Norwegian shipbuilder Kleven for the construction of six anchor-handling vessels.

The AHTS vessels will be assigned with LR’s class notations 100A1, Offshore Supply Ship AHTS, Fire Fighting Ship 1 (2400), Ice Class 1A PS, RD (2.8) and IWS.

LR Copenhagen marine client manager Morten Jensen said: "It is great to see yet another order placed by Maersk Supply Service to LR class, confirming the very good and close relationship between Maersk Supply Service and the business development department in Copenhagen office.

"Our hard work has ensured that LR is again the preferred choice for classification by Maersk Supply Service."

"It is rewarding to see that our hard work has ensured that LR is again the preferred choice for classification by Maersk Supply Service."

Construction of the vessels is expected to start in June 2015, with deliveries scheduled between the fourth quarter of 2016 and third quarter of 2017.

The vessels will be built at Kleven Verft and Myklebust Verft shipyards in Norway.

The contract also includes an option for additional four vessels, which will be delivered by the first quarter of 2018 if all options are exercised.

In August, Maersk Supply Service ordered four subsea support vessels from Cosco Dalian Shipyard with options for two additional ships.
