MAN Diesel & Turbo has introduced the L35/44DF, a new dual-fuel four-stroke marine diesel engine.

The new L35/44 engine offers a dual-fuel option of running on gas and diesel and can also be installed as a retrofit of the 32/44CR-T2 engines that are already in operation.

MAN’s new dual-fuel engine has been developed to comply with IMO Tier II emission limits in diesel mode and IMO Tier III limits in gas operation.

The new engine, which has an output of 530kW/cylinder, can run on marine diesel oil (MDO), marine gas oil (MGO), heavy fuel oil (HFO) and natural gas.

The inline L35/44DF is available in 6-10 cylinder configurations, equivalent to total power outputs from 3.2MW to 5.3MW.

The engine is claimed to offer the highest power output in its segment and complements the larger L51/60DF type.

MAN Diesel & Turbo started the test phase of the engine’s first prototype at the start of the second quarter of 2012 at its Augsburg facility in Germany.

The company has also developed a V-type engine version that will enlarge the power-output range of its dual-fuel engine portfolio.

MAN said that with the new L35/44DF engine, it is continuing the expansion of its product programme with a dual-fuel engine based on common rail technology.

Subsequent engine operation is mainly planned for gas mode with a separate pilot ignition system, based on a technology used by the truck industry that is independent of the primary common rail injection system.

The company said that the common rail system is retained and fully functional as a back-up system in the event of any problem while operating in gas mode.
