The Canadian Government has officially rolled out MV Fundy Rose to serve the Saint John, New Brunswick, to Digby, Nova Scotia ferry route.

Scheduled to enter service on 18 July, MV Fundy Rose was showcased to the public.

The 124m-long vessel is designed to accommodate 1,317 passengers and 245 cars. It has a cruise speed of 20k.

Canada’s Minister of Transport Lisa Raitt said: "This ferry service provides safe transportation for residents and visitors, moves goods, generates jobs and stimulates the regional economy and enhances the efficiency and reliability of the transportation corridor, as a whole."

Designed to replace the Ro-Ro passenger ferry MV Princess of Acadia, the new vessel was purchased from a Greece-based private ferry operator for €31m in October last year.

The government originally announced plans to replace the MV Princess of Acadia in June 2013.

In December last year, the MV Blue Star Ithaki arrived in Canada and was overhauled with marine diesel engines.

The new floor surfaces, vessel fenders, a truckers lounge, a children’s play area and a business lounge were also added, in addition to painting of car decks and exterior surfaces.

Bay Ferries operates the Saint John-Digby ferry service, which has received $45m grants from the Canadian Government since 2006.
