Texas-based Oceaneering International has signed a deal with BAE System for the construction of a subsea support vessel.
The 353ft-long vessel will be used to provide subsea intervention services such as inspection, maintenance, and repair (IMR) projects and hardware installations in the deep waters of the US Gulf of Mexico.
The IMR projects include chemical well stimulation and hydrate remediation, while the hardware installations include flowline jumpers, flying leads, and subsea trees, pumps, and separators.
Oceaneering president and CEO M Kevin McEvoy said, "Our vessel will be equipped to perform increasingly complex deepwater field development installation work and life-of-field IMR projects resulting from increased drilling activity. In particular, this vessel will have a crane that is capable of handling lifts 100-tons greater than any of the vessels we currently operate. This will increase our capability to meet our customers’ demand to safely handle heavier subsea payloads in deeper water depths."
The new vessel will feature a Class 2 dynamic positioning system, a helideck, a 250t active heave compensated crane, a working moonpool and two 13,000ft-rated Oceaneering work class remotely operated vehicles.
An on-board satellite communications system will enable the vessel transmit streaming video to shore personnel for real-time work observation.
The subsea support vessel will accommodate 110 personnel. The US flagged vessel is expected to be delivered by the end of first quarter of 2016.
McEvoy said the construction of the vessel will allow them to maintain their competitive position and to meet what they believe will be growing demand and more rigorous technical requirements for their ultra-deepwater Subsea Projects services in the GOM.
"Additionally, by being Jones Act compliant this vessel will minimise the need for and risks of vessel-to-vessel hardware transfers," McEvoy added.
Oceaneering provides remotely operated vehicles, built-to-order specialty subsea hardware, deepwater intervention and manned diving services to the offshore oil and gas industry.
