Rolls-Royce deploys Paramarine software to expand ship design capabilities

Rolls-Royce has selected the Qinetiq GRC-developed Paramarine software to expand its ship design capabilities.

Rolls-Royce has selected the Qinetiq GRC-developed Paramarine software to expand its ship design capabilities.

Rolls-Royce’s new ship design team will use Paramarine as its marine design software tool for the development of naval ship designs.

The software will be used to develop new designs for naval, coastguard and other maritime customers.

The team will mainly focus on developing offshore patrol vessels (OPVs) and naval auxiliary opportunities, as opposed to large combatant ships like frigates and destroyers.

Rolls-Royce capability manager of naval ship design Peter MacLeod said the company needs to have world class software tools, processes and people in order to deliver new naval ship designs.

"We selected Paramarine based not only on its extensive and proven capabilities in supporting naval ship design but also because of its excellent reputation in the market," MacLeod said. "Specifically we selected Paramarine for its market-leading early-stage design capabilities."

Paramarine has been used by commercial and naval shipbuilders, designers and universities to model and analyse concept vessels.

The software speeds up the process of early-stage ship design, allowing the development of new projects from scratch in short timeframes, according to Qinetiq GRC managing director Vittorio Vagliani.
