Rolls-Royce to deliver waterjets and engines for China’s Zhuhai fast ferries

Chinese operator Zhuhai High-Speed Passenger Ferry has selected Rolls-Royce to provide waterjets and high-speed MTU diesel engines to power its two new aluminium catamaran fast ferries.

Designed by Netherlands’ CoCo Yachts, the vessels are currently under construction at the AFAI Southern Shipyard in China.

The fast ferries will be equipped with an MTU 16V 4000 M70 engine that delivers 2,240kW of power, making the vessels capable of cruising at a maximum speed of 34k.

Rolls-Royce commercial marine senior vice-president Richard Wang said: "These waterjets are developed specifically to meet the reduced speed requirements of many high-speed ferry operators.

Rolls-Royce said these ferries will be some of the first to feature the Rolls-Royce Steel S71-4 waterjets. The 41.5m-long and 10m-wide ferries will be able to carry up to 288 passengers.

The first ferry in the series is expected to be delivered in December of this year and will serve routes in the Pearl Delta between Zhuhai, Shekou and Hong Kong.

"This is all the more important in terms of future business opportunities because many fast ferries operating on the busy South China routes are due for upgrades," Wang added.

In January, Rolls-Royce secured a contract from the Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities to deliver a new, efficient propulsion system for its future Alaska-class ferries.
