Singapore-flagged vehicle carrier Baltic Breeze has collided with a Spanish fishing vessel off the Port of Vigo, Spain, leaving three dead and two missing.

The reason for the crash is as yet unknown, but all parties are cooperating with the authorities carrying out the investigation.

According to a coastguard source, the incident occurred when the 164m Baltic Breeze entered the port of Vigo at the same time as the 34m fishing boat Mar de Marin was leaving it.

Vigo coastguard official Jose Maria Suarez-Llanos said the fishing boat and the cargo ship were alerted to the situation to avoid a crash, but it was inevitable as they were very close.

"They are still searching for the two missing crew members."

Vigo fisherman’s association chief said that the impact of the collision damaged the fishing boat’s hull, which allowed water to enter and down the vessel in around three minutes.

Three crew members of the Mar de Marin fishing vessel have been reported as dead and two as missing. The crew of the Baltic Breeze are unharmed and the ship was not carrying any cargo at the time.

"Of the five people we were searching for, we have recovered three from the sea, unfortunately deceased," Suarez-Llanos said.

Emergency services have deployed two helicopters and rescue ships at the site and five of the ten crew members have been rescued alive from the water. The search is continuing for the two missing crew members.
