Wärtsilä has secured an order to deliver 30 Wärtsilä 50DF dual-fuel engines for five Ice-class LNG carriers being constructed by Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering (DSME) in South Korea.

After delivery, these new Arc 7 design vessels will operate in arctic conditions, serving the Yamal LNG project in Northern Russia.

Each carrier will be equipped with four 12-cylinder Wärtsilä 50DF engines and two nine-cylinder Wärtsilä 50DF engines, which will be capable of using both LNG and conventional marine diesel fuels.

Wärtsilä ship power vice-president Lars Anderson said: "Altogether, Wärtsilä has been contracted within the past 12 months to supply 90 dual-fuel engines to 15 of these Arc 7 Ice-class LNG carriers for the Yamal project.

"This is a clear endorsement of the very high-efficiency and reliability of the Wärtsilä machinery, which owners and shipyards around the world recognise."

In November 2014, Wartsila secured an order to deliver 54 dual-fuel engines for ice-breaking LNG carriers being built by DSME and intended to serve the Yamal LNG project.

According to estimates, the Yamal LNG project is expected to produce 16.5 million tonnes of LNG a year by the end of 2017, for shipment to Europe, Asia and South America.

In another development, joint venture company Wärtsilä Yuchai Engine has been contracted to supply 20 Wärtsilä Auxpac 32 generating sets to five new 14,500TEU container vessels being built for China Ocean Shipping Group (COSCO).

The vessels are being constructed by Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding in China, a subsidiary of the China State Shipbuilding Corporation.
