Wartsila has won a contract from the South Korean government to supply the 20DF dual-fuelled engine for the state-owned Incheon Port Authority (IPA) Guideship.

South Korea’s Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) will design and coordinate the 200t Guideship on behalf of IPA.

The vessel which will be equipped with the dual-fuel engine and its 9 cylinders can operate on either gas or liquid fuel oils.

The South Korean government has specified environmental sustainability as a priority for the vessel, which will be operated in the port of Incheon, carrying passengers at times.

Wartsila Wartsila Ship Power, Specials vice president Aaron Bresnahan said that the IPA’s Guideship is a green ship and represents an industry trend.

"The fuel flexibility that our DF engines offer enables not only environmental sustainability, but fuel cost savings as well since these engines can operate on a wide range of fuels," Bresnahan said.

The vessel which will have a length of 38m, breadth of 8m and depth of 4.8m is scheduled to be in operation in December this year.

In gas mode the engine, which features two separate fuel injection systems, will be compliant with MARPOL Tier III exhaust gas emission regulations.

According to the company, when the engine is operating on gas, the fuel injection system injects less amount of liquid fuel, which makes it possible to adjust to certain environmental restrictions that could not be met when using conventional injection systems.

The conventional system is used when the dual-fuelled engine is operated on standard liquid marine fuels, while the switch between fuels can be made automatically and without loss of power.
