Wärtsilä will supply the six-cylinder multi-fuel capability 34DF main engine to a bulk cement carrier of JT Cement, a joint venture between Sweden’s Erik Thun and Norway’s Jebsen Cement.
The vessel’s dual-fuel engine technology will be capable of operating on liquefied natural gas (LNG) and a choice of marine diesel fuel (MDF), bio fuel and heavy fuel oil (HFO).
Available in six to 16-cylinder configurations, the 34DF engine will be capable of switching from gas to diesel instantly and without loss of power, Wartsila said.
In addition to the main engine, Wärtsilä will also provide an enclosed gas valve unit (GVU) for easier installation and additional engine room safety.
Wärtsilä ship power 4-stroke sales vice-president Lars Anderson said: "LNG is no longer a ‘niche’ fuel for a few specific types of ship; nowadays virtually all merchant vessels can take advantage of the environmental and cost saving benefits that LNG fuel offers."
Scheduled to be delivered in 2015, the ship will operate in Northern European waters, which comes under sulphur emission control areas.
Meanwhile, Wartsila has agreed to supply ballast water management systems (BWMS) to Yangzhou Guoyu Shipbuilding’s 22 bulk carriers in China.
Wärtsilä’s Aquarius UV BWMS will be installed on each of the 38,000dwt vessels. The company will supply the first of the 44 BWMS units in December and close the deliveries by the end of 2015.
Wärtsilä ballast water management systems director Joe Thomas said: "This is an important order and is indicative of the growing need for ballast water discharging to be properly managed.
"These vessels will operate in and around US waters, and it was imperative that the selected BWMS have the appropriate approvals."
