Wärtsilä is to supply gas-handling systems for six large ethane carriers (VLEC) being built by Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) for India-based Reliance Group.

The 87,000m³ capacity vessels are being constructed at SHI’s yard in South Korea under a contract with the option for supplies to additional vessels.

The company will deliver a cargo-handling package, including the process and arrangement engineering, the deck tank, equipments for cargo handling and a reliquefaction plant to deal with C-ethane from the American shale gas.

"Wartsila has developed a new patented cargo-handling reliquefaction technology for larger LPG carriers, above 60,000m³."

Wärtsilä Ship Power Flow and Gas Solutions vice-president Timo Koponen said: "Our technology and know-how in this field uniquely positions us to offer the most appropriate solutions for VLECs, which is an application that is rapidly expanding."

Wartsila has developed a new patented cargo-handling reliquefaction technology for larger LPG carriers above 60,000m³. The technology aims to reduce installation, operation and maintenance costs for ship owners.

The cargo-handling systems give complete protection for the freight at various stages of transportation, such as loading and unloading. Delivery of the systems is expected to begin in 2016 and will be completed in early 2017.

The new Reliance vessels will be carrying ethane as feedstock for the petrochemical industry, especially from shale gas sources in the US for the plastic production units in India.

Transportation of ethane is a growing business and the global fleet of VLEC will see an increase in number, Wärtsilä stated.
