Wärtsilä has extended its low-speed X-generation engine portfolio with the addition of the new X92 electronically-controlled common-rail engine, with a bore of 920mm.
The first 92-bore engine is scheduled for delivery in 2014; the fuel efficient engine will be suitable for large and ultra-large container vessels more than 8,000 teu.
The new X-series engines feature an extra long stroke and reduced engine revolutions, allowing a larger propeller diameter.
Wärtsilä Ship Power vice president merchant Lars Anderson said that the series of electronically controlled low-speed, two-stroke engines is in line with the current and future needs of the marine sector and that the new X92 is an essential addition to the series.
"Container vessels are a vital element within the transportation infrastructure supporting the global economy," Anderson said. "With the environment and fuel economy likely to be the future market drivers, Wärtsilä is positioned as the most suitable systems provider for extended ship power solutions."
According to the company, the X92 engine will offer fuel savings of 10%, resulting in a reduction of CO2 emissions, making it easier to achieve an improved energy efficiency design index (EEDI).
In May 2011, the company launched its low-speed X-generation engine series with two mid-sized engines, X62 and X72, which are designed for vessels that use mid-size low-speed engines, such as Capesize bulk carriers, Panamax bulk carriers, Suezmax tankers and Panamax container vessels.
Wärtsilä’s X-series also includes the X35 and X40 engines, which serve vessels like small bulk carriers and product tankers, general cargo vessels, reefers, feeder containerships, and small LPG carriers.
The company said that the first of the new electronically controlled X35 low-speed engines was started in November 2011 and passed its factory test in February 2012.
