Finnish shipping company Finnlines has awarded a contract to Wärtsilä for the supply of exhaust cleaning scrubber systems for three of its vessels.

The new development represents a repeat order as Finnlines placed a similar contract in 2014 to equip six of its ships with exhaust cleaning scrubber systems.

Under the new contract, Wärtsilä will deliver its hybrid in-line scrubber system for three Finnlines vessels. Delivery of the equipment is expected to take place in early 2016.

"Wärtsilä’s solution will offer the vessels with the flexibility to operate in both open and closed loop modes."

Wärtsilä’s solution will offer the vessels with the flexibility to operate in both open and closed loop modes.

In addition, the compact in-line version delivers an efficient space and weight saving solution.

The scrubber systems successfully clean the exhaust to allow the ships to continue operating on heavy fuel oil, enabling them to meet the sulphur oxide emissions regulations of International Maritime Organization (IMO).

In June, Wärtsilä secured an order from a European ship owner and operator to deliver hybrid scrubber systems to clean the exhaust emissions from three 2500teu container vessels.

Delivery of the scrubber systems under this order is expected in December this year.

Under the contract, installation of the solution will be performed at the Jinhai Heavy Industry in China.

Wärtsilä will also offer engineering and consulting support during the installation, along with ongoing technical support throughout the vessels’ lifecycle.
