Wärtsilä Moss has won a contract to provide inert gas generators (IGG) for a floating production, storage and offloading (FPSO) unit being built by South Korea’s Daewoo Shipbuilding & Engineering (DSME) under a $2bn order from Inpex.
Wärtsilä Moss will provide two identical IGG skids that will help prevent potential explosions, forming part of the topside module with pressure vacuum (PV) breakers and control systems.
The IGG units will serve the primary operation of the vessel, which will transfer condensate to tankers for delivery to markets, while the topside modules will help in drilling and production or processing of offshore hydrocarbons.
Wärtsilä Moss general manager of inert gas systems for offshore Odd Ivar Lindlov said: "The IGG units perform the same function as they would do on a tanker vessel but as these units fire fuel gas they are positioned on topside to avoid the use of fuel gas in an enclosed space."
The new FPSO will have a length of 336m, breadth of 59m and weight of about 110,000t with a capacity to produce 85,000 barrels of oil per day and store up to 1.14 million barrels.
Scheduled to be delivered in April 2016, the FPSO will operate in the Browse Basin as a part of Inpex’s Ichthys project off the coast of Western Australia.
Gas produced from the Ichthys field will undergo preliminary processing offshore and will later be exported through an 889km subsea pipeline to onshore processing facilities in Darwin.
The Ichthys LNG Project is expected to produce 8.4 million tonnes of LNG and 1.6 million tonnes of LPG per year, along with 100,000 barrels of condensate each day.
