Wärtsilä to supply dual-fuel engines for Danish LNG ferry

Wärtsilä has secured a contract to deliver the main propulsion generating sets for a new double-ended ferry to be built for the Danish municipality Samsø Kommune.

Wärtsilä has secured a contract to deliver the main propulsion generating sets for a new double-ended ferry to be built for the Danish municipality Samsø Kommune.

Designed by Denmark’s OSK-ShipTech, the new vessel to be built by Remontowa Shipbuilding in Gdansk, Poland, will be the first Danish ferry to run on liquefied natural gas (LNG).

Scheduled to be operational by late 2014, the ferry will be powered by four Wärtsilä 20DF dual-fuel engines running on LNG to carry passengers, cars and trucks between Jutland and the island of Samsø.

Powered by four azimuth rudder propellers electrically driven from dual fuel LNG/MGO generator sets, the ferry will be capable of carrying 160 cars and 600 passengers.

The dual-fuel engines, which will have low emission levels, allow for an easy switch to conventional marine fuels if necessary, offering the operator a high level of redundancy, Wärtsilä said.

Wärtsilä Ship Power vice president of sales Aaron Bresnahan said: "The overriding priorities for the owners were to achieve the highest possible level of operational reliability to support the local business but with focus on environmental sustainability, which, among others, means to ensure excellent overall efficiency in energy consumption."

The new 100m long ferry is one of the smallest ships to be equipped with Wärtsilä 20DF engines.

The design of the ship is tailored to its operating profile and route, while bunkering of LNG is scheduled to take place in the Hou harbour in Jutland.
