Incat has secured a contract to build the world’s first high-speed passenger Ro-Ro ship, which will be powered by environmentally friendly liquefied natural gas engines.
The 99m high-speed ferry is being built at the Incat Tasmania shipyard at Prince of Wales Bay in Hobart, Australia.
Incat chairman Robert Clifford said the use of natural gas-powered ships must replace ships with less environmentally friendly engines.
Each catamaran hull will feature a modified GE Energy LM2500 gas turbine that will drive a Wartsila LJX 1720 waterjet, which is expected to lower emissions and operating costs.
The ferry is scheduled for delivery in 2012.
