Statue Cruises has signed an agreement with Derecktor Shipyards to complete the world’s first hybrid ferry using hydrogen fuel by April 2011.

Under the contract, $4m will be invested to retrofit an existing hull.

The 1,400-horsepower New York Hornblower Hybrid will run on a combination of energy generated by Tier 2 diesel engines, hydrogen fuel cells, solar panels and wind turbines.

Power will come from a proton exchange membrane fuel cell that turns hydrogen into electricity, while solar panels and wind turbines will help power the vessel.

On completion, the 600-passenger vessel will feature an outdoor sundeck and two spacious interior decks.

Eco-friendly materials will be incorporated throughout the vessel as part of an EPA-funded project taking place in its San Diego port.

Statue Cruises is a subsidiary of Hornblower Cruises & Events.
