Global seaborne trade dropped 4.5% during 2009, though deliveries of new vessels grew by 42%.

According to UNCAD’s Review of Maritime Transport 2010 report, total seaborne trade in 2009 was estimated at 7.84 billion tons, lower than 2007 levels and a peak level in 2008.

Container port throughput declined 9.7%, down to 465.7 million teu in 2009.

The report, however, said supplies of new vessels increased 42% to 84 million dwt at the beginning of 2010, bringing the total capacity of the world merchant fleet to 1,276 million dwt.
