Mozambique Ports Development Company (MPDC) will expand the handling capacity of Maputo Port to 12 million tons in 2011, an increase from its 2010 capacity of 8.7 million tons.
MPDC said the increased capacity will enable it to handle more coal freight from South Africa, India, China, Turkey and East Africa.
The company plans to invest $750m to increase Maputo’s handling capacity to 48 million tons annually by 2033.
Last year the government renewed MPDC’s contract to run the port from 2018 to 2033, according to Reuters.
MPDC is a subsidiary of South African logistics company Grindrod.
