A Spanish ship management company has pleased guilty to unlawfully discharging oil-contaminated waste and will pay a $2.5m fine.

Consultores de Navegacion has admitted guilt in the US District Court of Boston to a variety of charges including violating maritime pollution laws from its vessel M/T Nautilus.

It was found that between June 2007 and March 2008, M/T Nautilus engineers used a pipe to bypass the ship’s oil water separator and discharge oil-contaminated waste directly into the sea.

Under the conditions of the agreement, the company will serve three years of probation, needed to implement an environmental compliance plan for its vessels.
