New Zealand’s Ports of Auckland has announced it will carry out berth deepening and wharf extension works at its Fergusson container terminal to handle larger container ships.
The next generation of container ships calling at the terminal are expected to carry between 5,000 and 7,000 TEUs, the company said.
To handle deeper draft ships, the berth depth will be increased to 15.5m chart datum, the depth measurement at lowest astronomical tide.
The company said it will also build a small part of a planned new northern berth.
The construction work is scheduled to take between 24 and 30 months.
