A Turkish bulk carrier has been hijacked by Somali pirates in the Gulf of Aden, Turkish authorities have announced.

Turkey’s Transportation Minister Binali Yildirim said two Turkish frigates were following the Horizon-1, which was en route from Jordan to Saudi Arabia when it was hijacked by Somali pirates, state-run Anatolia news agency reported.

Speaking to Reuters, East African Seafarers’ Assistance Programme coordinator Andrew Mwangura said he believed the ship was carrying sulphate.

The attack is seen as unusual because of rough seas at this time of year.
