South Korean shipbuilder Hyundai Heavy Industries has won a contract from Korea Marine Fund Corporation to construct five medium and big size patrol vessels.

The contract, valued at KRW149.9bn, involves the construction of two 300t-class inshore patrol vessels, one 500t-class vessel, one 1,000t-class vessel and one 3,000t-class offshore patrol vessel.

The ships will be deployed for sea rescue, anti-smuggling duties and coastal and offshore patrol.

The construction of the vessels will take nearly 40 months after which they will be sent to the Korean Coast Guard by 2012, the company said.
