Hong Kong-based Fleet Management has been fined $10m for spilling more than 53,000gal of oil into San Francisco Bay, US.

Fleet Management was operating the 901ft Cosco Busan on 7 November 2007 when it struck the Bay Bridge, leading to an oil-spill over 26 miles of shoreline.

The company admitted two felony charges and a misdemeanour in the US District Court in San Francisco after negotiating its fine with federal prosecutors.

The oil spill, which led to the death of more than 2,400 birds, would cost $70m to clean up, according to government estimates.
