Key global shipping lines are to defer a hike in congestion surcharges at Aqaba Port in Jordan until further notice, according to the Jordan Times.
A consortium of global shipping lines last week decided to implement a $500 congestion surcharge hike for 40ft containers and $250 hike for 20ft containers.
The decision, however, has resulted in concern that the prices of important commodities will increase before the holy month of Ramadan.
Subsequently, Evergreen Line announced that it would defer the hike until further notice according to a statement issued to the Jordan Times by Naouri Group, the shipping line’s only agent in Jordan.
Shipping Agents Association president Rudain Kawar said that the Japanese shipping firm, K Line and the Mediterranean Shipping Company had decided against implementation of a hike.
Kawar told the newspaper that the moment Maersk declared the deferral, most other shipping lines followed suit.
