New technology has been developed to continuously monitor emissions from vessels that can also report the findings instantly to emissions regulatory bodies.

The continuous emissions monitoring system is a 3ft×5ft×2ft laser-driven, single-enclosure device that can monitor emissions and provide automated analysis and data recordings from multiple smokestacks and boilers.

The system analyses and records nitrogen oxides, sulphur oxides and carbon dioxide as well as particulate matter, developer WR Systems said.

GPS interface data tracks actual vessel position to support regulatory requirements in emission control area zones, which usually begin 20 to 25 miles off the coastline of major ports and cities.
