Global containership fleet capacity is expected to fall to 13.26 million TEU by end of the year, representing a drop of about one million TEU forecast in January, according to the most recent estimates.

According to Paris-based AXS-Alphaliner, a year-on-year growth rate of 7.3% for 2009 is likely to be lower than the 13.4% expected growth.

In August, London-based Clarkson shipbrokers had an estimated containership fleet growth of 9.7% for 2009.

A total of 190 container ships have been delivered until the end of August this year, adding a total of 784,000 TEU in capacity to the global box fleet.

Ship scrapping for the year has reached 145 ships with a combined capacity of 275,000 TEU, according to the figures by Alphaliner.
