Swedish ports have handled 38.9 million tonnes of cargo during the second quarter of this year, down by 20% compared to the same quarter in 2008 and a larger decrease than during Q1 this year, reports the Swedish Institute for Transport and Communications Analysis, Sika.

About half of the total cargo turnover is handled by four ports: Goteborg (9.6 million tonnes), Brofjorden (five million), Trelleborg (2.6 million) and Malmo (1.7 million).

In the first quarter of this year, all Swedish ports handled 74.4 million tonnes of cargo, almost 15 million tonnes less than the corresponding period last year.

The number of sea-passengers during Q2 was 7.4 million, down by 3.7% compared to the same period in 2008, according to SIKA.
