Somali pirates have released a Turkish vessel hijacked in the Gulf of Aden on 8 July with 23 crew members aboard.

The Istanbul-based cargo ship MV Horizon-1 was set free after the pirates received a ransom fee believed to be in the region of $1.5m, according to Reuters.

The news came shortly after it was announced that pirates had hijacked a Spanish fishing vessel the MS Alakrana in the Indian Ocean.

The Alakrana was seized last Friday by armed gunmen with 36 crew members on board.
