The Canadian Government has proposed regulations to improve security for domestic ferry services.

Under the proposal, operators would be required to have security plans in place to detect threats and take preventive measures to protect domestic ferries, reports.

The requirements would impact eight domestic ferry operators, 20 ferry routes and 32 ferry facilities but most are already voluntarily complying with the proposed regulations.

The initiatives have been designed to safeguard the public, ferry workers, adjacent communities, ferry operators and their employees, the news service said.
