Two World War II cargo ships will be towed out of Suisun Bay in northern California and sent to Texas to be sold for scrap.

The move comes as part of an effort by the US TRANSPORTATION Department to dispose of a number of ships that are leaching toxic paint and other chemicals into the waterway, reports.

US Deputy Secretary of Transportation John Porcari said under a new proposal 72 ships, including the two World War II cargo ships, would be cleaned in dry dock in San Francisco.

The federal government will hire contractors to remove fuel from the tanks, scour invasive species from hulls and blast away peeling paint.
