The EU’s anti-piracy mission has been extended for twelve months until late 2010.

According to reports, the patrol area has also been doubled to five million square kilometres.

A computer-based system known as Mercury will also be introduced to the system, which will plot vessel movements with flash reports and share the results via satellite, UHF, VHF and internet-based data.

To date, Mercury has tracked between 10,000 and 15,000 vessel movements for over 5,000 registered users.

The EU will continue to collaborate with regional governments in order to increase the scope of military surveillance and operations.
