Mediterranean Shipping will visit the port of Hampton Roads, Virginia, as part of a revised service to the Middle and Far East.

The new service is expected to annually bring 30,000 to 40,000 20ft containers through the port, according to Virginia International Terminals.

The service is expected to begin in January.

Mediterranean Shipping’s service is aimed at the Heartland Corridor project of Norfolk Southern Corporation, which will open in the second half of 2010.

Once complete, the project will enable containerised freights in double-stack trains to cut nearly 200 miles and a day’s transit time between the east coast and the midwest.

Since July, container volumes in the route have risen from 64,000-68,000 to 72,000-76,000.
