United Arab Shipping Company (UASC) has commissioned Siemens Industry Solutions Division to equip nine of its new-build container ships.

The engineering giant will install each vessel with a waste heat recovery energy management system and one booster propulsion with shaft generator function.

The waste heat recovery system, which converts exhaust gases to electric power, is aimed at cutting fuel consumption and reducing CO2 emissions.

With the aid of waste heat utilisation UASC aims to improve propulsion efficiency and reduce maintenance costs and the operating times of existing auxiliary generators.

The company expects the container ships to start operations in 2011, which are being built by Korean Samsung Heavy Industries.

The A13 new-building ships with a capacity of 13,100teu were ordered by UASC in 2008.
