Samsung Heavy Industries in South Korea said it will build a 100,000t class cruise ship for US owner Utopia.

The $1.1bn ‘apartment-type cruise ship’ will be designed for long-term vacations.

With a crew of nearly 900, the vessel will have 200 apartments and 204 hotel-type cabins, the shipbuilder said.

According to Samsung, the contract will be signed in the first half of 2010 for delivery in 2013.

Since 1997, Samsung has built eight large passenger ships.

The shipbuilder also developed an environmentally friendly passenger ship in July which cuts gas emissions by 90%.
