Newbuild deliveries of chemical tankers rose during 2009, according to new figures.

From January through to October, 169 chemical tankers, with a capacity of 10,000-60,000dwt, including specialised tankers of 3.76 million dwt, were completed, said Clarkson Research Services. In 2008, about five million dwt of newbuilds were completed.

The current global fleet comprises 1,488 chemical tankers of 36.63 million dwt, the UK-based research firm said.

The report forecasts the delivery volume will reach 5.5 million dwt in 2009, 5.2 million dwt in 2010, 4.1 million dwt in 2011 and 1.6 million dwt in 2012.

During the last ten months, 25 chemical tankers of 670,000dwt were demolished, an increase from the 19 ships of about 500,000dwt scrapped in 2008.
