extension for ships to make technical modifications to facilitate the consumption of sulphur in fuel.
An EU directive, effective from 1 January, requires ships at berth in European Union community ports to use marine fuels with a maximum 0.1% sulphur content.
EU member states can request ships to provide detailed evidence of the steps they are taking to achieve compliance, according to the directive.
