Korea’s Ministry of Environment has selected the Korean Register of Shipping (KR) to act as a verification body for its pilot greenhouse gas emissions trading scheme.

The scheme, launched on 1 January 2010, has been designed to provide a base for the country’s voluntary 2020 emissions reduction target.

Under the authorisation KR, a member of the International Association for Classification Societies, will independently verify the greenhouse gas emissions of shipping companies.

The verifying body is also expected to ensure participating firms’ greenhouse gas emissions are monitored, measured and recorded.

KR recently verified the accuracy of a carbon calculator, which Hanjin Shipping has added to its website to allow customers to understand the amount of greenhouse gas emitted by their cargo for any given route.
