Samsung Heavy Industries has surpassed rival Hyundai Heavy Industries to become the world’s number one shipbuilder.

Samsung’s newbuild backlog is 8,387,000CGT compared to Hyundai’s 8,358,000CGT at the start of the year, according to research company Clarkson Research.

The research said the third shipbuilder, Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering, had a backlog of 8,227,000CGT.

This is the first time in 30 years that Hyundai has lost its leading position in terms of order book backlog.
