The Port of Long Beach, US, said it is planning a $3bn capital construction project to increase the port’s capacity.
The Port of Long Beach executive director Richard Steinke said under the plan the port will enlarge marine terminals, build a taller, wider bridge and expand on-dock rail capacity.
The port’s Middle Harbor project, which received go-ahead in April 2009, will allow it to replace two irregularly-shaped container terminals with a facility containing a large on-dock rail yard.
In 2010, Long Beach is expected to release a draft environmental report for a $1.1bn project to replace the 40-year-old Gerald Desmond Bridge with a larger and higher bridge to accommodate more traffic.
The port is also planning to release the draft environmental report for a project to build a new container terminal and on-dock rail yard at Pier S.
