Gothenburg port authorities in Sweden are looking for private stevedoring firms to operate the port’s roll-on/ roll-off, container and auto export and import terminals.

A new port authority and three newly formed terminal companies are working ahead of the privatisation of cargo handling aimed at boosting the profitability and efficiency of the port.

As part of restructuring of the cargo hub, private companies will buy the right to use the berths and terminals, but the port authority would own all the land and infrastructure.

In 2009, container traffic fell 5% from the previous year to 818,000 teu with traffic recovering in the second half after falling 10% in the first six months, the port authority said.

Ro-ro traffic shrunk 19% last year to 504,000 units and oil shipments declined seven from a record 2008 to 21.1 million metric tonnes.
