Carnival Corporation has signed a deal with Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri to build two 3,600-passenger cruise ships for its Princess Cruises brand.

The 139,000t ships have been designed to carry 3,600 passengers at double occupancy, the company said.

Carnival said the new Princess ships will cost the company €558m a piece ($768m) and are expected to enter service by spring 2014.

The vessels will be almost 20% larger than the line’s largest ships now afloat, the company said.

The last new ship to debut at the line was the 3,080-passenger Ruby Princess in 2008.
