Major Indian ports will handle about 800 million tons (mt) of cargo a year over the next five years, up from 530mt in 2008-09, India’s shipping ministry predicts.
The ministry forecasts a three-fold increase in cargo handling capacity by 2025-26 by increasing the capacity of major ports to around 1,600mt.

The ports are expected to handle about 798mt of cargo by 2014-15.
Visakhapatnam Port is forecast to process the most cargo traffic at 10mt by 2014-15 followed by Kandla Port at 92.5mt and Jawaharlal Nehru Port at 91mt.
With a total handling capacity of 574.77mt, India’s major ports handled 530.53mt in 2008-09 compared to 519.3mt in 2007-08.
In the last five years the traffic handling capacity of major ports has gone up by 48%, it said.
